Description
I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare December 16th, 1963 playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the JERRY HERMAN and MICHAEL STEWART musical comedy hit "HELLO, DOLLY!" at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. (The show would open January 16th, 1964 at the St. James Theatre in New York City and run for 2844 performances.) ..... The musical, which would be awarded 10 Tony Awards including "Best Musical" starred the legendary CAROL CHANNING as "Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi" and featured EILEEN BRENNAN, DAVID BURNS, CHARLES NELSON REILLY, IGORS GAVON, ALICE PLAYTEN, JERRY DODGE, SONDRA LEE and GORDON CONNELL ..... CREDITS: Music and Lyrics by JERRY HERMAN ("Milk and Honey", "Mame", "Mack and Mabel", "La Cage Aux Folles" and "Dear World"); Book by MICHAEL STEWART based on the "Matchmaker" by THORNTON WILDER; Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by FREDDY WITTOP; Directed and Choreographed by GOWER CHAMPION; Produced by DAVID MERRICK ..... DETAILS: The 36 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors and members of the creative team but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos. Also includes a full page ad for the Original Cast recording of "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Coming in 1964) on RCA Victor Records ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Penny in My Pocket" which was cut out-of-town and "Come and Be My Butterfly" which was cut in New York ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
