This is a rare April 20th, 1948 broadside (single page playbill) from the National Tour engagement of the MARY CHASE comedy "HARVEY" at the Biltmore Theatre in Los Angeles, California. (The production opened November 1st, 1944 at the Forty-Eighth Street Theatre in New York City and ran for 1775 performances while simultaneously playing on the road.) ..... The Pulitzer Prize winning play starred JOE E. BROWN as "Elwood P. Dowd" and featured MARION LORNE, MARY DALLAS, HELEN RANDALL, DOROTHY SCOTT, HELEN GILLETTE, CARL LOW, PHILIP CARLYLE, MITCHELL HARRIS, FRANCES WOODBURY, SYDNEY GRANT and WILLIAM SHARON ..... CREDITS: Book by MARY CHASE; Sets designed by JOHN ROOT; Directed by ANTOINETTE PERRY (Namesake of the Tony Awards); Produced by BROCK PEMBERTON ..... Side Note: JOE E. BROWN played "Elwood P. Dowd" during the first National Tour and was honored in 1948 with a special Tony Award for the role. He starred in "Harvey" on and off for almost five years, taking over the role at New York's Forty-Eighth Street Theatre in 1948 before crossing the Atlantic to replace SID FIELD at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London (1949) and touring Australia in 1950 ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 4 7/8" X 12" inches, was printed on a light brown newsprint stock and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and the wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a fold across the middle, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian.
