This is a rare February 17th, 1976, OPENING NIGHT playbill from the Original Broadway production of the CLIFF JONES musical flop "ROCKABYE HAMLET" at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City. (The production opened February 17th, 1976 and closed after only seven performances.) ..... Based on Shakespeare's classic drama about a fictional Danish Prince avenging his royal father's death, this embarrassment put the final nail in the rock musical coffin. Director GOWER CHAMPION staged the show like an all-out rock concert, and the result was such an incoherent mess that many found it hard to believe that a director of Champion's caliber had allowed himself to be associated with the show. The musical starred LARRY MARSHALL as "Hamlet" and ALAN WEEKS as "Claudius" and featured BEVERLY D'ANGELO, RANDAL WILSON, MEAT LOAF, CHRISTOPHER CHADMAN, LEATA GALLOWAY, KIM MILFORD, IRVING LEE, RORY DODD and WINSTON DeWITT HEMSLEY ..... CREDITS: Book, Music and Lyrics by CLIFF JONES based on the classic "Hamlet" by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE; Scenery designed by KERT F. LUNDELL; Costumes designed by JOSEPH G. AULISI; Directed and Choreographed by GOWER CHAMPION; Produced by LESTER OSTERMAN PRODUCTIONS and JOSEPH KIPNESS in association with MARTIN RICHARDS, VICTOR D'ARC and MARILYN STRAUSS ..... DETAILS: The 44 page playbill measures 5 5/8" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors and members of the creative team, but no cast photos .....
