    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare January 21st, 1963 playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the DAVID SHAW, LEE POCKRISS and ANNE CROSWELL musical comedy "TOVARICH" at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The show would open March 18th, 1963 at the Broadway Theatre in New York City and run for 264 performances.) ..... The musical starred VIVIEN LEIGH (who would win the Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Musical" in her only musical stage role) and JEAN PIERRE AUMONT (both are shown in the cover photo) and featured JOHN EMERY (who would be replaced out-of-town by ALEXANDER SCOURBY), TAINA ELG (replaced out-of-town by LOUISE TROY), GEORGE S. IRVING, LOUISE KIRTLAND, BYRON MITCHELL, MARGERY GRAY, MICHAEL KERMOYAN, PAUL MICHAEL, GENE VARRONE and DEL HORSTMANN ..... CREDITS: Music by LEE POCKRISS; Lyrics by ANNE CROSWELL; Book by DAVID SHAW based on the comedy by JACQUES DEVAL with English adaptation by ROBERT E. SHERWOOD; Sets designed by ROLF GERARD; Costumes designed by MOTLEY; Choreographed by HERBERT ROSS; Musical Direction by STANLEY LEBOWSKY; Directed by DELBERT MANN (who would be replaced by PETER GLENVILLE); Produced by ABEL FARBMAN and SYLVIA HARRIS ..... DETAILS: The 28 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light edge wear, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
